10.25.2011 Press Release - 3rd Annual Sahuarita Pecan Festival Announces Culinary Arts Scholarship Competition This Saturday

Are you ready for the thrills and spills of Southern Arizona’s very own cooking competition? The Sahuarita Pecan Festival has teamed up with local chefs, Sahuarita High School’s Culinary Arts Program and the Quail Creek community for the 3rd Annual Pecan Festival Culinary Arts Scholarship Competition.

The contest, “Iron Chef: Pecan,” will be this Saturday, October 29th from 5pm – 9pm at the Quail Creek Clubhouse. Tickets are on sale now for $20 and can be purchased by contacting Elizabeth Gallagher, Sahuarita High School Culinary Arts Instructor, or at Quail Creek’s main office, the Green Valley Chamber of Commerce and Creative Edges Custom Framing.

The “Iron Chef: Pecan” competition will feature teams of Sahuarita High School Culinary Arts students paired with renowned chefs from across the Santa Cruz River Valley going head to head competing for the titles of best pecan appetizer and best pecan dessert creation. Our volunteer culinary stars include Chef Christopher Floyd of Quail Creek, Chef Rodney Timm of La Posada, Chef Tara Westin of La Posada and Chef Wendy Gauthier of Chef Chic Catering.

And the best part? The audience gets to taste and judge these exquisite creations!

The Culinary Arts Scholarship Competition will also showcase live entertainment and a complimentary wine tasting provided by One Hope Wines of Young’s Market. One Hope Wines donates 50% of all profits to various charities based on the bottle purchased.

Press Release - Entertainment Line-Up for Sahuarita Pecan Festival Announced

Grab your dancing shoes and head on over to the Sahuarita Pecan Festival’s Desert Diamond stage! With classic rock to country sounds and everything in between, this year’s Sahuarita Pecan Festival line-up of local favorites will have you moving and grooving all day long.

Kicking off the food, fun and festivities will be the Walden Grove High School Marching Band. The Red Wolves will get your feet to tapping with classics like We Will Rock You.

Following the opening ceremony, Mariachi Cielo de Mexico will spice up the stage. This group features young and talented mariachi performers from all across Tucson.

Heating up the afternoon stage will be Sahuarita’s own Jesus Lopez and local country favorite Kevin Pakulis. Performing separately and together, Lopez and Pakulis will have you out of your chair and onto the dance floor before the end of their first songs.

Lopez, the area’s top rising musicians and son of Farmers Investment Company’s long-time employee Rocky Lopez, features blues-inspired hits with a unique blend of country and rock. Pakulis, winner of the Americana singer-songwriter award, shakes the stage with the raw energy of his edgy, guitar-driven hits like Yeah Yeah Yeah.

Headlining this year’s Festival is the Tucson Weekly 2011 TAMMIE award winner for best local cover band, 80’s & Gentlemen! This rocking group has made its name bringing audiences across Tucson back to ‘the good old days’ with timeless hits from the 70’s and 80’s.  80’s & Gentlemen will take the stage at approximately 6:00 PM.

9.30.2011 Update:  3rd Annual Sahuarita Pecan Festival to Benefit Fourt Local Nonprofit Organizations

Sponsor and vendor participation and other activities enable the Pecan Festival to financially support the work of these local nonprofit groups. Additionally, these non-profits will be at this year’s Festival to raise awareness and needed funds for their important work in our community.
